Why Paper Receipts Are Bad for the Environment

Every time you buy a coffee, grab groceries, or pay for gas, you're handed a small slip of paper that you almost certainly throw away within seconds. It seems harmless. But multiply that moment by every transaction on the planet, and the environmental cost is staggering.

The Scale of the Problem

An estimated 400 billion paper receipts are printed globally every single year. In North America alone, receipt production destroys over 3 million trees annually and consumes more than 9 billion gallons of water in the manufacturing process.

That adds up to 302 million pounds of solid waste going to landfill every year — just from receipts. To put that in perspective, it's the equivalent weight of about 30,000 school buses dumped into the ground annually.

Thermal Paper Is Toxic — Not Just Wasteful

Here's what most people don't realise: receipt paper isn't regular paper. The vast majority of receipts are printed on thermal paper, which is coated in a chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA) or its cousin BPS.

BPA is a known endocrine disruptor — meaning it interferes with your body's hormonal system. Studies have linked BPA exposure to reproductive problems, heart disease, and increased cancer risk. Every time you handle a receipt, trace amounts of BPA transfer to your skin. Cashiers who handle receipts all day have been found to have significantly elevated BPA levels in their bloodstream.

The BPA coating on thermal paper is the same reason receipts can't be recycled. Tossing a receipt into your paper recycling bin actually contaminates the entire batch.

This means receipts don't just create waste — they create unrecyclable, toxic waste that sits in landfill leaching chemicals into groundwater for decades.

Governments Are Already Banning Them

The environmental and health evidence is so strong that governments are starting to act:

The Hidden Carbon Footprint

Beyond the trees, water, and chemical waste, receipt production generates an enormous carbon footprint. The full lifecycle — from logging, to paper mill processing, to chemical coating, to shipping rolls of thermal paper to millions of stores — produces CO2 equivalent to 471,000 cars on the road every year.

And that's for a product with an average useful lifespan of about five seconds before it ends up in a bin.

What's the Alternative?

Email receipts were the first attempt at going paperless, but they come with their own problems: customers don't want to give out their email address, merchants hate asking for it, and the emails usually end up in spam folders or get lost in overflowing inboxes.
